LGBTQ Theology locates itself within the historical Christian faith, known as "The Great Tradition" as summarized in The Apostles' Creed:
We believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Ghost;
The holy Catholic Church;
The communion of Saints;
The forgiveness of sins;
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting.
Amen.
Jesus was no stranger to theological deconstruction and reconstruction. In fact, his theology was regularly founded on the axiom, "You have heard it said, but I say to you...". Therefore, we also embrace the task of wrestling with what has been taught and what we think we know as we pursue the mind of Christ.
Jesus was a friend of the sinner and demonstrated a preferential affection for the outcast, the underdog, the reject, the poor and the lowly. That being said, he also socialized in the elite circles. As followers of Jesus we seek to live at peace with all people and strive to discover a theological ethic and orthopraxy that inspires and compels us to pursue equity for all in our diverse, pluralistic world.
Jesus' approach to a relationship with God disrupted both the religious "orthodoxy" and political "hegemony" of his day. He did not seem interested in people-pleasing or accumulating a mass following to overturn the powers of his day. The mission of his ministry was not to Christianize the empire and establish a theocratic political seat of power. Instead, his mission was to preach the Gospel of the kingdom of God by proclaiming liberty to the poor, the oppressed, the spiritually blind and captive.
LGBTQ Theology aims to emulate this methodology and be prophetic voice in this generation, for believer and non-believer alike. We invite our readers to discover and engage in a vision of the Gospel that is non-coercive, non-nationalistic, and open to the new move of the Spirit at work in the world, permeating the entire cosmos with Divine presence, faith, hope and love.
